The course is intended to give learners the competencies to work professionally as Carers within homes for the elderly and also independently as personal carers with the elderly in their own home. This qualification will provide the necessary theoretical knowledge, practical skills and competencies for learners to apply the carer skills in workplace. The learner will be able to understand the overall processes of the required care for the elderly. Upon completion of the course, participants will be able to:
1. Recognise and demonstrate good work practices in the provision of care for elderly persons.2. Promote and assist the elderly person to enable maximum independence and active aging3. Evaluate the elderly’s ability to cope, their lifestyle and assess the needs for assistance in the care plan4. Evaluate the capacity of the elderly, plan and use appropriate problem solving skills in order to determine ways in which to improve the overall health of older people5. Use appropriate Health and Safety practices and infection control protocols to safeguard oneself, colleagues and the clients. Recognize, prevent and react professionally to safety risks both for the elderly and for the worker6. develop recommendations for improvement of the environment of the elderly7. Identify and refer nutritional needs in elderly persons to other professionals8. Assist elderly persons with mental health challenges to live independently, implement care plans and help them integrate in the community9. Understand, and apply reflectively and critically the main ethical principles of caring for the elderly person10. propose strategies for addressing challenges which elderly might encounter.11. Use practical strategies to organise and prepare tasks and activities paying particular attention to meet the clients’ needs and preferences.12. Enhance the quality of life of the older adult.13. Works as team-member within a multidisciplinary team.14.
