Registered Jobseekers at Jobsplus

1.1 Registered Jobseekers Trend (2011-2021)

Over a span of a decade, registered jobseekers with Jobsplus have decreased by 82%, from 6,587 in 2011 to 1,167 in 2021. If one analyses the level of registered jobseekers in Malta and in Gozo, one notices that in both Islands the level of jobseekers dropped significantly. In fact, the level of jobseekers in Gozo decreased by 84%, from 703 in 2011 to 108 in 2021 while in Malta, the drop decreased by 82%, dropping from 5,884 in 2011 to 1,059 in 2021. The registered jobseekers data included those jobseekers registering under Part 1 and 2 of Jobsplus' unemployment register.

1.2 Registered Jobseekers Segmented by Age Cohorts (2011-2021)

The largest age cohort of registered jobseekers at Jobsplus is that of the 45 years and over (46%), followed by those aged between 30-44 years (29%). Youth unemployment (under 25 years) averaged 18% of total registered jobseekers over the past decade. Over the past decade all age cohorts registered a drop. The largest drop was registered in the under 25-29 years cohort (-87.4%); then from the under 20 years cohort (-83.8%); followed by the 30-44 years cohort (-83.6%) and then by then 20-24 cohort (-82.3%).

1.3 Registered Jobseekers segmented by Occupation (2011-2021)

The majority of jobseekers registering with Jobsplus are looking for jobs as Clerks and support (21%); followed by those looking for Service workers and shop/market sales workers jobs (17%); Technical and Associate Professionals (14%); Craft and related workers jobs (11%); Professionals (11%); Elementary jobs (10%); Plant and Machinery Operations and Assemblers (8%); and. Over the past decade, registration of jobseekers in Managerial and Skilled Agricultural, Fishery and Forestry jobs are quite low. In fact, those looking for Managerial and Skilled Agricultural, Fishery and Forestry jobs amounted to 6% and 3% respectively. Notwithstanding that the latter jobs occupy a small share from the registered jobseekers pool, however they are the groups that increased gradually over the past decade.

1.4 Registered Jobseekers segmented by the highest educational level achieved (2011-2021)

43 % of those jobseekers registering at Jobsplus have an ISCED Level 3 classification, namely those with a SEC or O level certification. Moreover, almost 34% of jobseekers have a primary level of education (ISCED level 1). Only 9% of jobseekers have an educational level higher than that of an "A" level standard (ISCED level 4 and higher). A noticeable drop in those having primary education (Level 1) without any proper certification after 2010, and the increase in those having an secondary education (Level 3) is simply the result of the introduction of a new classification of education (ISCED-11), together with an exercise that Jobsplus has conducted to check on the qualification of its jobseekers prior to the introduction of the ISCED-11 classification.

1.5 Registered Jobseekers segmented by Duration of unemployment spell (2011-2021)

Over the past decade, there was a registered shift from those jobseekers (registered with Jobsplus) having an unemployment spell of over 1 year. In fact, the share of those having an unemployment spell over 1 year reduced from 34% to 31% over the past decade, whilst for those having an unemployment spell of more than under 21 weeks unemployment spell increased from 45% to 55%. Those jobseekers having an unemployment spell of 25-52 weeks had an average share of 19% of total registered jobseekers.

1.6 Registered Jobseekers segmented by Gender and Island (2011-2021)

Over the past decade, the shares between the sexes remained the same having Malta males occupying a share of 76% of total registered jobseekers and females having a share of 24%; whilst those in Gozo occupy a share of 66% and 34% respectively. The percentage share of total unemployment in Malta and Gozo for 2021 is 75% and 25 % respectively. However, both islands have registered a significant drop-in unemployment rate over the period under review.
