Since 2015, through Jobsplus, the Government has enforced a 2% quota requirement for employers with over 20 employees, mandating that at least 2% of their workforce comprise individuals with disabilities.
Employers who are unable to satisfy this legal requirement in accordance with the Persons with Disability (Employment) Act (CAP 210) are bound to make an annual contribution for each person with a disability they should be employing, with a maximum cap of €10,000 per employer.
The Lino Spiteri Foundation’s role is to keep close corporate relations with employers and deal with persons individually on a one-stop-shop basis, providing initial registration, advisory assistance and job search support to each registered disabled person.
This partnership leverages Jobsplus’ financial support and resources and the corporate sector's expertise to create employment opportunities for persons with disability using a job carving approach.
When recruiting persons with a disability, you could be eligible for wage subsidies through the Access to Employment Scheme
Employers recruiting persons with a disability may be eligible for wage subsidies through the Access to Employment Scheme. Eligible employers can receive a subsidy of €166.40 (full-time) / €83.20 (part-time) per week for a maximum of 156 weeks for engaging registered disabled persons. Rates are revised annually to include cost-of-living increases.
Eligible applicants cover all employers except public entities, Government Departments, and entities with majority government shareholding (over 50%).
Employers can claim a fiscal incentive equivalent to 25% of the person’s basic wage, up to a maximum of €4500 for each person with a disability employed. Employers benefiting from the Access to Employment Scheme (A2E) are not eligible for this fiscal incentive.
Employers who are not benefitting from the A2E scheme may be exempted from paying their part of the national insurance contribution for their employees with disability.
