1.1 Labour Turnover in Malta and Gozo (2014-2019)

The illustration below shows the trends of labour tunover within major economic sectors for the years 2014 to 2019. The highest turnover (around 62%) is registered within the Accomodation and Food Service activities; followed by those in Administration and support service activities (52%) and  Arts, Entertainment and Recreation (51%) ). The lowest labour turnover is registered in the Agriculture, Forestry and Fishing and Activities of extraterritorial organisation and bodies sector (12%).

Labour turnover refers to the number or percentage of workers that leave an organization and who are eventually replaced by new employees. 


Labour turnover is calculated by dividing the total number of termination forms received in a year (within a particular economic sector) by the average number of employees in employment within a particular economic sector

1.2 Count of Employers by Size 

The illustration below shows the number of active employers segmented by their size at an interval of 5 years starting from 2005 till 2015. The latest available information is for 2019. One can notice that the majority of employers in Malta and Gozo fall in the Micro Size (95%), followed by those termed as Small (4%) and Medium (1%). Large companies in Malta and Gozo usually tally around 126 companies. Data segmented by employer size and economic sector is available for download. 

Definition of employer size: Micro companies employ between 1 and 9 employees; Small companies employ between 10 and 49 employees; Medium companies employ between 50 and 249 employees; while Large companies employee over 250 employees.
